Fact Slap 👋 Today in 1914, the Super-Dreadnought HMS AUDACIOUS is sunk after striking a mine laid off the northern coast of County Donegal, Ireland. She is one of the newest battleships in the Royal Navy, having only been commissioned in 1913. In June 1914, she and her 4 sisters represented Great Britain at the reopening of the Kiel Canal in June 1914. The Canal had been closed for widening to allow Germany to move her battleships from the Baltic to the North Sea without going around Denmark. W

HMS Audacious was the last King George V-class dreadnought battleship built for the Royal Navy. On Oct 27 1914 it hit a mine laid by German auxiliary minelayer SS Berlin. It slowly sank in front of passengers of the White Star ocean liner RMS Olympic, sister ship to the Titanic. Even though those aboard Olympic saw the sinking and reported it to American newspapers, the Royal Navy decided to cover up the sinking, not officially acknowledging the loss until Nov 14 1918. #ww1 #wwi #ww1history #cap
